(Ballast + Ignitor) INSTART Systems.
WIRING ADVICES
The Ballast output marked with the symbol
is generally called "hot terminal", as to this terminal is connected the wire which transfers the high-voltage pulses to the lamp (see fig.3).
For the connection, use an high insulated cable, silicone rubber coated or with double coating.
Photo Electronics can supply it in bobbin or cutted at the required lenght and already with connector provided with a silicone cup.
Besides, keep this cable as short as possible to avoid striking pulses attenuation and radio frequency noise emission. The remaining wiring doesn't need other particular warnings to observe.
Particular attention must be paid to the following aspect:
Suitable components must be chosen according to lamp type, voltage and frequency.
The temperatures of luminaire components should be within the limits prescribed by applicable standards.
The wiring should be arranged with cables of suitable section, according to the running currents and to terminals capacity. Furthermore the isolating coverings should not be gripped under the terminal screw. A bad contact in fact, may cause a localized overheating which may damage the components or even cause a fire.
For the installation of our systems, please refer to what prescribed by the national and international standard rules in force in your Country.
NOTES
The load capacitance of a cable is depending on te cable insulation as well as on te type of wiring. Load capacitance must be measured in the luminaire. From our tests, the Hot wire we supply can be extended if necessary, up to 5 m.
The wiring diagram reported on the ignitor label must be respected.
The hot restrike ignition of HID lamps, is not influenced by ambient temperature within the range -25°C/+75°C. In many enviromental conditions however condensation or dripping phenomena may occur. In such cases it would be necessary to adopt particular wiring conditions when the HR system is mounted, in order to prevent these phenomena from provoking partial discharge (arcings) between the terminals, which are dangerous and causing the non ignition of lamps.
Furthermore it must be reminded that in case of non-ignition of the lamp, the system keeps on delivering a voltage peak of some thousands of Volts. Therefore, before making any intervention on the luminaire or on the gearbox, make sure that main supply is cut out.
Like for all electrical appliances, the installation and replacement of ballast and ignitors must be performed only by qualified operators.
LAMPS
Lamps which fit for the hot restrike systems, are double-ended models, TS or D2 type, both Sodium High Pressure and Metal Halide, which are normally produced by all lamps Manufacturers (Philips, Osram ...), or special models produced by VENTURE Lighting (USA), with E40/Mogul socket and hot terminal wire coming out from the other side of the glass jacket (top wire).
Normal lamps with E40 socket cannot be used, as they haven't enough insulation.
LAMP-HOLDER
On Hot restrke units is necessary to use highly insulated lamp-holder, Rs7/Fc2 or similar, to avoid sparks and earthing discharges risk during the lamp ignition period.
The best solution should be to mount a good quality lamp-holder over a 1mm thick 60x80mm Teflon or mica foil, using also Teflon screws and nuts.
Some lamp-holders manufacturers can supply such special versions (such as Bender & Wirth and Vossloh); however Photo Electronics can supply them together with Warm Start power supply Kits, or will indicate where they are available.
