REPHASING CAPACITOR

Since the ballst/lamp system is an inductive load, the circuit has a power factor of about 0.4-0.6. Therefore it is convenient to add a phase capacitor, with appropriate value, connected in parallel to mains.
The capacitor in H.R. systems has also the function to filter and block the ignition voltage peaks which could be transmitted towards mains, producing supply line noise and interferences. If a circuit with autotransformer is used, it is convenient to connect phase capacitor after the autotransformer, thus allowing the use of a smaller size one.

CONTROLS BEFORE SYSTEM STARTING

Follows correctly the schematics reported on ignitor label.
Check that the main supply is correct and within the operating range of ballast/ignitor.
Check the absence of any conductive foreign body close to the parts to which voltage is applied and particularly to HV cable.

STARTING TEST WITHOUT LAMP

Test the system without installing the lamp. At mains switching on, verify that in no part of the luminaire or gearbox are visible sparks or arcings.
Test should be effected in a dark place.

STARTING WITH LAMP

After lamp ignition, wait that system has reached the typical working condition. Then simulate a mains failure (switching off/on the main supply). If lamp doesn't re-start, before replacing the ignitor or the ballast, verify wiring, fuses and that safety door switch operates correctly.

SYSTEM OPERATING

  • Avoid unnecessary lamp re-ignitions: too much hot re-starts can affect the lamp lifetime.
  • Check that lamp and system temperatures are within those specified by the Manufacturer.
  • Replace the lamp immediately after it is exhausted.
  • Do not operate with H.R. system in open circuit condition (without lamp installed): although ballast is projected to bear a condition of open circuit, this could affect the wiring and components insulation.
  • Before making any system repairs, make sure that mains is cut out.
