INSTART power supply, is an electromechanical system which follows the classic scheme of ballast and Ignitor, both for small power units (70-150W) and bigger one (1000-2000W). Still today these devices offer more guarantee of reliability in the time than whole electronic devices. Ballast is slightly bigger than traditional one, and for the requirement of an higher insulation is manufactured using a patented system. The ballast winding is made on multi-throated bobbins (patented).
The whole ballast (types from 70 to 400W) is then put into a nylon reinforced case and filled by resin or (types from 1000 to 2000W) completely encased by resin through a mould extrusion process.
Normal Ignitors are 3 wires (called superimposed Ignitors) or 2 wires (pulse Ignitors) system. Both generate the high-voltage pulses necessary to ignite the lamp. The circuitry designed to let the lamp hot restrike, is substantially different from common equipments, although could be considered similar to a superimpose type ignitor.
On INSTART units , high-voltage pulses (from 4 to 8 times higher than on normal systems), are generated by both Ignitor and Ballast that work together to produce them. The FIG.2 shows the H.R. system block diagram.
The "INSTART" Ignitor is a voltage pulses generator which transmits pulses generated to a second winding of the Ballast, through F and I output. This one like a big high voltage transformer, amplifies the pulses to the width necessary to re-ignite the lamp when it is in " hot " state. Sodium HP bulbs need 18-22Kv and Metal Halide 25-35Kv pulse or even more for their instant re-start.
Voltage pulses are in phase with lamp supply and anticipated against the max. amplitude of sine-wave main supply.
The current sensor (A.T.) disconnects the pulse generator (Ignitor) by the R relay as soon as lamp ignition has taken place.
An electronic timer cut-off the pulse generator after 10sec. if lamp for any problem doesn't ignite .
The rephasing capacitor C must be used not only to adjust the power factor but also to filter and block noises generated by the ignition peaks.
